Seventh Sunday of Easter, May 24: Ascension, a Sunday Scriptures blog

“I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always … I will not leave you orphans.” What an insight into God’s character this passage gives! Our God loves us so much that he cannot bear that we might feel abandoned or orphaned. So we are given Divine Reassurance of a new way of experiencing God’s presence — not through the historical Jesus of Nazareth who, as a specific human person, is locked into his own era and place — but through the Spirit, Who continues Jesus’s divine presence and activity in all times, including ours. Our challenge is to notice and receive that continuing divine activity! Can you see Jesus’ activity of working miracles, healing, forgiving, finding the lost, guiding and teaching, calling disciples, and sacrificing Himself for us still going on today?  The pandemic showed us all a lot of divine activity in the goodness of so many people. Can you see God’s loving activity in your life as well as in the world? That’s the Spirit at work!
