May 23: Pentecost, a Sunday Scriptures blog

I find a poignancy in these words of our opening prayer today: … with the divine grace that was at work when the Gospel was first proclaimed, fill now once more the hearts of believers … ” The role of God as Spirit is to sustain the life that Jesus brought to the earth through his life, death and resurrection. The Spirit is a renewing spirit — “renew the face of the earth,” we pray. How essential is this act of Spirit- God! For every person, every culture, every religion goes through periods of decline, dryness, inertia. Today in the U.S., more than 30% of adults are “nones,” those who are not Church members or do not believe in God. We so need “the divine grace that was at work when the Gospel was first proclaimed.” St. John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and our current Pope Francis have all called on us ordinary church members to become evangelists, proclaimers of a dynamic and living faith in our daily lives. Is there some way we can do this — perhaps starting with our families? How about sending a faith email or Facebook post today?
