March 11, Bumper Sticker Sunday – a Sunday Scriptures blog

I still remember years ago seeing my first John 3:16 bumper sticker. Of course we cradle Catholics usually don’t know our Scriptures by heart, so after I had seen a couple more of these, I went to my Bible to see what this was about. Today in our Gospel (Cycle B) we have those wondrous bumper sticker lines from John’s Gospel: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish, but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world might be saved through him. These two sentences are a profound summary of everything else in the Gospels. I, we, need to bask in the blessed assurance that God loves our world and is not interested in condemning me or you or our world. God is interested only in giving us life. It is an open invitation, one we can accept any time, and at all times. Have a wonderful bumper sticker week!
