Two beloved sons appear in our Scriptures this weekend: Isaac, son of Abraham, and Jesus whom a voice from a cloud identifies: This is my beloved son. Listen to him. Our second reading (Romans 8:31b-34) gives us the link: God … did not spare his own Son … how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Abraham’s generosity in offering his only son parallels God’s generosity in offering Jesus to us. Our God is revealed in today’s Scripture as abundantly, extravagantly generous. We stand before God’s love as before the seeming endlessness of a waterfall, whose beginning and end we do not see, but whose abundance is overwhelming. “Deep calls unto deep in the roar of a cataract,” a psalm says. What does the total giving of God speak in my depths?
