“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men,” Jesus says to Simon and Andrew, and probably also to James and John who also are called in today’s Gospel. I wonder if they were afraid? If Jesus was? Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, had been arrested. They must all have known what the outcome was likely to be. The disciples seem not to hesitate. Through their call, they are being given a special relationship with a special person, but they are also being given a special mission. During this liturgical year, Year B, we continue reading from the Gospel of Mark. In it we will be given many glimpses into how Jesus formed and taught his disciples so that they could continue his mission. Relationship and mission — they go together! Are they in sync for me in this still new year?
