Sisters attend Serra Club dinner

Sister Ann Clark, Sister Martha Bertke and Novice Sister Mi-Kyoung Hwang attended the annual dinner which the Serra Club of the St. Marys and Sidney deaneries held at the Spiritual Center of Maria Stein on Friday, December 27, 2019.

Serra USA was formed in 1935 by a small group of lay people in Seattle who decided to form an organization to promote and foster vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life. Also, they assist members to recognize and respond in their own lives to God’s call to holiness. Father Junipero Serra, the great missionary, was chosen as their patron and the organization was named Serra Club of Seattle. Now they are found around the world.

The Serra Club of the St. Marys and Sidney deaneries was established in 2010 when they received their charter from Serra International and Serra USA. This local group meets on the second Thursday of each month at Holy Redeemer Church in New Bremen. Mass is at 7 p.m. with the meeting to follow. They provide various events and opportunities throughout the year.

For nearly 10 years, the Serra Club and the Spiritual Center have collaborated and hosted an annual appreciation dinner. They invite seminarians and their parents, as well as priests, brothers and sisters who live in this area. Also, women who are in formation for religious life are invited, as well as guests. Those in formation must be from one of the parishes in these two deaneries. This dinner is held one evening at the Spiritual Center, during the week between Christmas and New Year’s. It is a very enjoyable event! It is an excellent way to become acquainted with one another, to learn who is in formation and at what stage of formation individuals are, and most of all to encourage and support one another.

Two years ago, Sister Ann attended the appreciation dinner along with Sisters Mumbi Kigutha and LaKesha Church, who were novices at that time. Now both of them have temporary vows as Sisters of the Precious Blood.
