Community Homicide Prayer Vigil

Little did Qua’Lek Shelton, 15, know that a walk with a friend on Sunday, February 16th would be the last walk the two of them would make. Two days later, on February 18th, Qua’Lek lost his life following that Sunday’s drive-by shooting. His friend remains hospitalized.

Qua’Lek was a freshman at Dunbar High School and a member of the track team. On Saturday he placed 5th out of 50 entrants in one of the hurdles at Youngstown State University. In recalling this promising young man his coach remarked: “He smiled a lot. He was just a happy-go-lucky kid who knew where his talent was!” Qua’Lek is mourned by family, team mates and a host of friends. His funeral was held on Wednesday, February 26. We will gather to remember him this Saturday, February 29, at 12:00 noon in the 2400 block of Catalpa Drive.

“But the just man, though he die early, shall be at rest. For the age that is honorable comes not with the passing of time, nor can it be measured in terms of years. Rather, understanding is the venerable crown for men, and an unsullied life, the attainment of old age.” Wisdom 4: 7-9
