As Sisters of the Precious Blood Leadership Council, we are profoundly concerned for the well-being of our sisters and brothers here in the United States whose citizenship status may be uncertain or challenged. We stand in solidarity with immigrants and asylum seekers, as well as all those who advocate for their rights and dignity. Rooted in the redeeming love of Christ, we affirm the sacred humanity and inherent goodness of every person, believing that each life reflects God’s image and is deserving of respect and compassion.
We acknowledge the hardships faced by those forced to flee their homes due to conflict, repression, persecution or environmental disasters. Migration is not only a national issue, but a global one that demands a compassionate and unified response. We call upon all those in positions of power — and upon each of us — to act with compassion and recognize the humanity in one another. Policymakers and government officials must embrace their moral responsibility to protect the most vulnerable in our communities, including immigrants and their families; create an accessible path for citizenship; and reform the current immigration system to ensure fairness, dignity and equity. We echo the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) in affirming that we have a “duty to welcome immigrants and provide care and aid to all in our land, while insisting on comprehensive immigration reform.”
Moreover, we urge our government to address the systemic root causes of migration. Long-term solutions must include fair trade policies, international economic aid, debt relief, and just tax and tariff systems. Only by addressing these systemic inequities can we begin to alleviate the cycles of poverty and violence that force so many to seek refuge.
During this sacred Jubilee Year, we heed Pope Francis’ call to open our hearts and homes to the stranger. We draw inspiration from the U.S. bishops’ message in “Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope”: We are one human family, and the dignity of every human person must be respected and protected.
As Precious Blood Sisters, we hold in prayer all who are scared, lonely or afraid. We pray that they may find comfort in God’s love and hope in the kindness of others. We bless all who journey toward safety and a brighter future, trusting in God’s providence to guide and sustain them. May the Precious Blood of Jesus unite all in bold action for justice, reconciliation and peace. Let us be tireless in prayer and advocacy, creating a world where every person is welcomed, protected and cherished.
