DAYTON — The Sisters of the Precious Blood paid tribute to their oldest living member at a special birthday celebration on Sunday, Aug. 22. Sister Consuella Salmon marked her 100th birthday on Aug. 25.

Dozens of friends, relatives and former students joined the Sisters of the Precious Blood at the Salem Heights motherhouse for a birthday party that included cards, wishes, gifts and song —- and of course birthday cake (actually three of them!).

During the celebration, Sister Consuella was presented with a framed letter of recognition and appreciation from Cincinnati Archbishop Dennis Schnurr and a plaque featuring a proclamation of August 22 as “Sister Consuella Salmon Day” from Trotwood Mayor Joyce Cameron. The afternoon closed with a special blessing for the special centenarian from Precious Blood Father Vince Hoying, followed by a sung blessing by CPPS members present.

Born in Denver, Colorado, the former Helen Salmon entered the Sisters of the Precious Blood in 1931. In her long life she has witnessed the reigns of nine popes, the administrations of 18 U.S. presidents, and personally knew 12 mothers general/presidents of her Precious Blood congregation.

An elementary school teacher for over 45 years, she cherishes a small notebook in which she has recorded the name of every student she ever taught, including the grade, year and school in which she taught them. She says she uses her notebook to pray for each of her former students daily by name.
