May 8, Good Shepherd: a Sunday Scriptures blog

It is “Good Shepherd Sunday.” This Sunday’s Gospel is one of the shortest in our three-year cycle of readings. It describes the unity between Jesus, his Father, and his sheep. It gives us a feeling of security about our lives as we hear Jesus say, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me … and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.” Today also is Mother’s Day. We don’t think of women as shepherds, although there is one account in Scripture (Exodus 2:16-22). During my many years of parish work, I have noticed that it is often the woman who is the shepherd in families. It is often the mothers who instill the first lessons about good and evil, who are the first teachers about love and reconciliation, who pull children out of instant gratification into other centered relationships, and give them their sense of security and self-confidence. And it is often the Mothers who insist that their families worship together consistently, even without the fathers in tow. Today I give thanks for the good shepherding of many moms I have known, and for countless other women who exercise shepherding roles in our Catholic parishes today.

  1. Your article on Eucharistic Congress was / is so important to share and comment on. Thank you

  2. So much better than the homily given by a local priest who actually told the congregation that the Good Shepherd would not be seeking any woman who committed abortion. I an strongly opposed to abortion, but Jesus showed compassion for sinners.
