August 19, Flavor – a Sunday Scriptures blog

flavorOnce a poor woman shared her story with me. One part of it was that for a year, she was left in a remote rural area by her trucker husband with only a supply of pinto beans to eat. And, Sister Mary, she said, he did not even give me salt. When I visit people who register as Catholics in the county hospital, many tell me they go to other churches now, and then they add: Well, it is the same God, isn’t it? It might be the same God, but it is not the same food. We are in the middle of the “bread of life” readings from the Gospel of John, five weeks in cycle B when we hear passages about Eucharist. Jesus makes that point about “not the same food” when he says, This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate [manna] and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever. Jesus’ people, the Jews, already had a bread tradition, but Eucharist was to be a distinctly different bread. How sad that so many Catholics have not figured out the difference Eucharist makes in their lives and seem not to miss the spiritual spice of Eucharist when they leave. How does Eucharist make a difference for you?
