Stand or fall

Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

In my years as principal of St. Christopher School, I loved to stop by the art room to feel the creative energy and enjoy the incredible masterpieces in the making. Coming into the room and leaving the room, my attention was often drawn to two stickers that hung on the side of a cabinet that stood at the entrance. The first sticker simply stated, “Don’t make me call out the Flying Monkeys!” Humorous, yet conveying a clear message! The second sticker stated, “Stand for something, or you will fall for anything!” Not as funny as the monkeys, but clearly conveys a message worthy of consideration!

I will admit, I have fallen for some pretty crazy things in my life! Reflecting back, I realize that at the heart of these “poor choices” was usually some “too good to be true” offer or promise, and I allowed emotion to guide my decision. I failed to engage in what I call a “gut check.” This is the point in my being where my head, my heart and my spirit converge. It’s where the essence of who I am and what I believe resides. This inner compass, when engaged, allows me to think things through and come up with a pretty good choice.

I have always had a sense that my inner compass aligned with the principle, you know the one that begins, “We hold these truths to be self-evident . . .” on which this great nation was founded. Recently, I have watched truth become irrelevant and the dignity of the human person become nonessential. I have found myself wondering day after day, do we as a nation stand for something, because we seem to be falling for anything. Please God! Have mercy on us!
