Calling all disciples

colored-light-56After the Easter Season and the great post Easter solemnities of Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, and the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, we return today to the “counted weeks” of the liturgical year called “ordinary time.” In the Gospel for this cycle A, 12th Sunday of ordinary time (Matt 10:26-33), Jesus is instructing his disciples — and that means us, too! — as he sends them out to preach. It is not a friendly world they will encounter, ready to welcome Truth and Light with open arms! So, the central message of Jesus’ words to the disciples is “Fear no one … do not be afraid.” Pope Francis calls on us all to be evangelizers, to speak about our faith openly and often. Perhaps we don’t need to be afraid of being thrown to the lions or burned at the stake, but our world also is not very friendly and receptive to religious people. That is true even within families! I find I have carefully to rehearse what I might say and how I might say it if I want my message heard. And yes, I do need courage to be that fearless person that will not always be respected or appreciated!
